Rules we build for
British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act, rather than PIPEDA, governs most private-sector businesses operating in the province. It requires consent, collection limited to reasonable purposes and reasonable security. PIPEDA still applies when personal information crosses provincial or national borders in the course of commercial activity.
Most BC sales carry 5% GST and 7% PST. Sellers based outside BC, including online stores, generally have to register for PST once their BC sales pass $10,000 a year, and that rule also covers software sold into the province.
B.C.’s accessibility law currently applies to public-sector organizations, and the province is drafting standards for service delivery that are expected to reach private businesses. Building to WCAG 2.1 AA now saves rework later.
Commercial email and SMS need consent, clear identification of the sender and an unsubscribe that works within 10 business days. That applies to US customers on your list as well when you send from Canada.
